In this age of gas exceeding $3 a gallon, why are NASCAR races still going on?

Admittedly, I am not a fan of auto racing, but still it seems to me that it's not a good example to have these events with their displays of wastefulness of fossil fuels when the rest of us are expected to conserve gas and energy.
