Is it a university or an university?

well we are taught that an is used before a word that begins with a vowel sound, but what is with 'university' I heard people say ' A university' I did some research on this and people say it is because the word 'university' begins with 'y' consonant sound (like 'you-ni ver....) but then my question is what is the sound of the letter 'U' ???
