Why are people in the developing countries so religious?

I think its a simple question with a simple answer. In poverty stricken countries, their lives are not elaborate and materialistic and they are not influenced by worldly pleasures, they are not 'spoilt' in their upbringing and their eyes are more open to a spiritual way of life. Poor people i always find are much more humble nicer and friendlier people, they are sincerely greatful for anything that they recieve from others and I believe that god loves these qualities in a human being so perhaps god guides these people more to his true path. All i ever hear from westerners is insults to third world countries and their way of life and how backward they are and how dirty and underdeveloped they are. Some westerners are very arrogant and really believe that they are better than everybody else and most of the time they are never greatful to god for giving them such a good quality of life.
